Spiritual Promptings
Hola hola todos!
We're heading into the last week of the transfer and I honestly can't believe it. These last few weeks have flown by. Our friends are doing well, and we have some visits set up this week with a few people that we are hoping to start teaching.
During one of our lessons with Keinis last week, we talked more in depth about the Restoration of the church. Hermana Rosales shared her incredible conversion story. She joined the church just three years ago when she moved to Chicago. It was amazing to see Hermana Rosales connect with Keinis and to hear her share how she came to know that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is the true church on earth today. She has a powerful testimony! Keinis also invited us to her house last weekend to celebrate her daughter Zoe's 10th birthday. It was great to be there with them for Zoe's special day. They are such a sweet family.
We celebrated Día de los Muertos with the Thomas family. They are a sweet couple in our spanish branch, and they served a mission in Mexico City a couple of years ago. We ate all sorts of traditional food that the people in Mexico eat to celebrate the holiday. Hermana Rosales also talked about what her family does to celebrate. Its such a special day devoted to remembering your ancestors and their stories.
In a talk by Loren Dalton titled "You are Receiving Revelation... Now Act on It," Brother Dalton said that many people find it difficult to determine whether a thought is their own or from the Holy Ghost. He shared a story from when he was a mission president in Brazil and a missionary said to him "President, I'm not sure about this. I thought I was acting on a prompting, but it was just my own thought.” Brother Dalton replied "Well, what do you mean?" The missionary said “I was walking by and I thought that we should stop by and clap at this house.” In Brazil, they don't ring doorbells and knock, they clap to have permission to come onto the property. The misionary explained, "I felt impressed to clap at this house, so we clapped and nobody answered, or they answered but they were really rude." Brother Dalton said, "Elders, it doesn’t work out that way. It's not always going to work out the way that you want. You can't say it didn't work out. You can say that it didn't work out the way you thought." Brother Dalton explained that we don't always get to know the rest of the story, but God knows how it ends. We must simply trust that we did what He wanted. Brother Dalton later had an experience that proved this. He said "I was interviewing a woman for baptism. I said, 'How did you get to know these missionaries?' The woman said, 'I love these missionaries, but they're not the reason that I am getting baptized.' I said, 'Well, why are you getting baptized?' She said, 'A few months ago, I was saying a prayer - well, I can't really say I was saying a prayer - I was yelling at God. And I said, 'God I don't think you really exist, if you do, prove it to me. Send me your angels.' Then I heard a clap at the door. I went to the door and peeked out, and it was two of your missionaries! I said, 'No way! I am not answering the door.' They finally left after they clapped for a while. Then I had this thought that came into my mind that seemed to say, 'Those were my angels!' But I said 'No. It couldn't be. There's no way He couldn't have even answered my prayer that fast because I just barely said it and all of the sudden they're there at my door.' For months it haunted her. She said that finally, 'about three months later two missionaries were walking down the street – the two that are going to baptize me now – they were walking on the other side of the street coming towards me. I crossed the street and stopped them. Before I could say anything, I started crying and I finally said, 'What do I need to do to join your church?'"
We often hear stories about people who act on spiritual promptings then witness miracles. However, it is much more often that we act on a prompting without ever knowing why we received it. I would like to invite you all to keep acting on the promptings that you receive. I testify that every prompting we follow leads to something miraculous, whether we get to see or not. The Holy Ghost speaks to us in small and simple ways. Even the smallest and most simple thoughts that we have to do good are inspiration from Heaven. I testify that God loves you. He will make you a powerful instrument in His hands as you are faithful and act immediately on the promptings that you receive from the Holy Ghost. I testify of these things in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.
Thank you for your love and support. I love you all!
Con Amor,
