Good, Better, Best

Hola hola todos!

I hope that you are all doing well!

We had another amazing week here. We were able to have our first lesson with Yrianni. We got to know her more and started talking about the Plan of Salvation. She already has a very strong testimony that what we teach as missionaries is true. She learned a lot from the missionaries in Colorado and is excited to continue strengthening her faith in Christ.

We also had another visit with our friend Keinis. She has a strong testimony of Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, and she reads the Bible every day. During our visit, we read some of 3 Nephi chapter 11 with her. In this chapter, Jesus Christ appeared to the people in the Americas after He was resurrected. We talked about what Keinis learned and felt as we read. It was so cool to see her add on to the knowledge that she already had of Jesus Christ.

Each week, we have the opportunity to sing hymns at a rehabilitation center close by. We take hymn books so that the patients can sing along. Some of the older ladies in the room said that the words were too small for them read. I pulled up the lyrics on my phone and made the letters bigger then handed them my phone and showed them how to scroll through the songs. A few lines into the first song, I looked at the two ladies and realized that they had flipped my phone over and were just staring at the picture of Christ in my phone case. I walked over to them and they laughed as they said that they didn't know how to use my phone. They loved the picture of Christ though. I sat down with them and scrolled through the rest of the songs so that they could sing along. I thought to myself about what great examples these two ladies were of how whenever we are lost in life, even if its just when trying to use technology haha, we can simply look to Jesus Christ.

On Saturday, we were able to do a bunch of service. We started by helping set up for an event that people were coming to to pack lunch bags for children in need. Then we went to help out at a fall festival at the church building on the Maricopa Indian Reservation. They were celebrating 140 years since the church was built. Its the oldest chapel of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on an indian reservation!

This past weekend, we had Stake Conference. During one of the talks, I got the impression that I needed to listen again to the talk Good, Better, Best by President Dallin H. Oaks. As I listened to it this morning, I realized that although it was given in 2007, it is very applicable to the world now. President Oaks started his talk by saying that "We should begin by recognizing the reality that just because something is good is not a sufficient reason for doing it. The number of good things we can do far exceeds the time available to accomplish them. Some things are better than good, and these are the things that should command priority attention in our lives." He explained that a great number of youth today are so involved with team sports and technology that they spend little to no time with their families or serving the Lord. He said that "some young people are amusing themselves to death—spiritual death." I believe that this applies to people of all ages. We often get so caught up in good things that we leave no time for the best things. I would like to invite you all to read or listen this talk, then evaluate whether your daily and weekly activities fall into the category of good, better, or best. I know that by doing so, you will be able to see what you are doing well and what you can change. President Oaks stated that "We have to forego some good things in order to choose others that are better or best because they develop faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and strengthen our families." I know that the best things in life are those that last the longest. The gospel of Jesus Christ and families are eternal. I know that Heavenly Father loves you. He will strengthen you as you devote your time and talents to serving Him and His children. Of these things I testify in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

I love you all! Have an amazing week!

Con Amor,
Hermana Kendrick
